April 21 in our gallery took place first in Russia auction of objects of applied art and design
The selection of items for the auction was held with the participation of Alexandre Vassilief, a well-known fashion historian, collector and Art Deco expert.
Among auction top-lots — lacquer panel by Jean Dunand «Hunting» (1935) and George Artemoff monumental canvas «Allegorical Scene» created in the late 1920s — 1930s.
Decorative panel «Hunting» by Jean Dunand (1877-1942) — a unique version of the author’s work, which once adorned cigar lounge of the famous liner «Normandie,» which struck contemporaries with its interiors. Created by different authors, they were one stylistic ensemble and served as a model for the design of modern land hotels. Because of its perfect synthesis of luxury and functionalism liner interiors could be attributed to the Art Deco masterpieces.
Decorative panels («Hunting», «Fishing», «Sport» and etc.), created for the liner «Normandie», exhibited in 1936, Charpentier Gallery in Paris. The works from this series represent a unique fusion of traditional Japanese lacquer art technology and bright exotic style of Art Deco.
Lacquer panels, furniture and interior design, made by Jean Dunand, are now the subject of hunting for many collectors, and prices for his work up to several hundred thousand euros. One of his last works, offered for auction sale, was represented in the famous Sale of Yves Saint Laurent collection on Cristies in 2009.
«Allegorical Scene» — painting, created in the heyday of George Artemoff (1892 — 1965) art. George Artemoff, painter, graphic artist, sculptor and set designer, was the bright representative of the Paris School. His works are in major French museums and enjoy success on the art market. At the end of 2010 at Sotheby’s decorative panel «Buffalo hunt» was sold for 40,000 pounds, an year earlier his «Nude with veil» was sold for more than 120 000 euros. Painting «Allegorical Scene» for a long time was kept in the collection of Simone and Claude Dray, the world’s largest collectors of Art Deco.
There are more than 70 lots in auction catalogue. Among them are unique, multicolored vases by Charles Cateau, sculpture and theater sketches by Erte, exclusive sculpture of bronze and ivory, rare lightings by Jules Leleu, French decorator, who also created some pieces for «Normandie».
